I have had a lifelong interest in astrology and also
in indigenous cultures and wisdom. It was through
these interests that I first encountered Mayan Astrology .
Traditional Mayan astrology is based upon day
month and year of birth. The ancient Mayan calendar
is based upon the sacred ratio of 13:20 having 20 symbols
known as day-keepers and 13 distinct tones and the
combination (13 X 20) resulting in a 260 days year.
Correspondences are calculated by day month and year alone –
not by the additional time and place often desired for
western astrology.
Dreamspell is a reformulation and modern application of
the traditional Mayan Tzolkin that brings in the 13 moons
of the year and that was co-authored by Jose and Lloydine
Arguelles. Dreamspell also is based on the 13:20 ratio and
has 20 daykeepers and 13 tones and has other cycles within
cycles of various lengths and magnitude.
Each Daykeeper is a specific archetype, each tone has a
different function and vibration. This is a great place to begin.
So that there is no cultural misrepresentation,
it seems important to distinguish between
"The Mayan Calendar" and "The 13-Moon Dreamspell Calendar.”
As Dr. Arguelles writes:
It is most interesting to combine Western astrology, the
traditional Mayan long count and Dreamspell Galactic signature.
together they create a multidimensional storyline that speaks
to the Soul and calls us forward on the journey to wholeness.
When I first encountered Dreamspell and found my own galactic
signature it was a feeling quite unlike I had experienced with my
traditional mayan day-keeper. It felt very much like my Dreamspell
day-keeper was connected to my north node of the moon placement
(which in western astrology is where one is heading whereas south
node is where one has been) . Interestingly, that feeling for me proved
to be on target because my signature is Blue Crystal Eagle
(crystal being the 12th tone) that corresponds to the 12th house of a
western astrology chart where my North Node lies.
It felt spiritual in nature and more future oriented, whereas the
traditional signature seemed to describe what is or has been.
That was true for me. Then I discovered a more universal
musing that rang true as well.
According to a theory proposed by Tracey Gendron of
astrodreamadvisor the Traditional and Dreamspell signatures
together have a specialized function.
“Your Dreamspell Signature represents your Potential, your Destiny.
It is the intuitive, feminine aspect of yourself that is pregnant with
the knowledge that you are being yourself now.
Your Classical Signature represents how you get to
your potential - what you must do, what action you must take.
It is the masculine aspect of yourself that knows what you must do,
in the real world, to truly fulfill your potential.”
